Machinery, compressed air, conveyors, and HVAC equipment generate sound continuously, and those hard surfaces send the energy right back into the room. The result is reverberation and sound buildup that makes a plant floor louder than the equipment alone would suggest.

Absorptive panels address that buildup. They reduce reflected energy inside the space, which lowers overall reverberant levels and makes speech, alarms, and verbal instructions easier to understand. Worth noting for planning purposes: absorption and transmission loss are different problems. Panels rated by NRC treat sound inside a room rather than sound passing through a wall between two rooms.

Factory selection criteria also tend to include things an office project never considers: fire performance for the occupancy, material that will not shed fiberglass near production lines, VOC-free content for indoor air quality, and panels that can be cut and fit around ductwork, conduit, and equipment.

Composite materials are essential in modern industries, combining strength, flexibility, and other properties that single materials alone can’t provide. From aerospace to automotive, composites offer unique advantages. Adding nonwoven felts to these composites takes their performance even further, especially in high-demand applications. At Bouckaert Industrial Textiles (BIT), we provide specialized nonwoven felts that enhance composite materials in strength, thermal resistance, and durability. This article explores the benefits of using nonwoven felts in composite materials, with a look at key industries and real-world applications.

Understanding Composite Materials and Nonwoven Felts

Composite materials consist of two or more materials with distinct properties, creating a new material that delivers enhanced performance. Often, composites are designed to be strong yet lightweight, a critical balance in industries like automotive, aerospace, and construction. The growing popularity of composites stems from their versatility and ability to meet strict industry requirements.

Nonwoven felts serve as a vital component in many composite applications. Typically used as reinforcing layers or carriers for resins, felts add specific characteristics to composites, enhancing their functionality. For instance, a fiberglass/polyester felt may improve thermal resistance, while an aramid felt can increase strength in high-stress applications.

The Role of Nonwoven Felts in Composite Materials

Nonwoven felts offer versatility in composite manufacturing. Acting as reinforcement layers, felts contribute to the composite’s structural integrity. Additionally, felts work well as carriers for resins and other binding agents, enabling a more cohesive and uniform final product.

Various types of felts are integrated into composite materials, including fiberglass, aramid, and polyester blends. Each type offers distinct properties that are suitable for specific applications. Fiberglass felts, for example, provide thermal resistance, while polyester felts offer flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The choice of felt depends on the end-use requirements of the composite material.

Key Benefits of Using Nonwoven Felts in Composites

Integrating nonwoven felts into composite materials enhances their performance in several key ways:

1. Thermal Resistance in Composite Materials

One of the primary benefits of using felts in composites is their ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Fiberglass and fiberglass/polyester blends, in particular, are excellent choices for high-temperature applications. In industries where thermal management is essential, such as automotive and aerospace, felt-enhanced composites maintain their integrity even in demanding conditions.

2. Flexibility and Conformability of Nonwoven Felts

Nonwoven felts add flexibility to composites, making them easier to mold and shape. This feature is particularly useful for parts that require complex geometries or custom designs. In automotive manufacturing, for example, felts allow for seamless integration into curved or irregularly shaped components, helping reduce waste and improve manufacturing efficiency.

3. Enhanced Durability and Longevity

By reinforcing composites with nonwoven felts, manufacturers can significantly increase the durability and wear resistance of their products. This added durability makes felt-enhanced composites ideal for applications subjected to continuous stress, such as structural supports in vehicles or insulation in industrial machinery. Durable composites result in longer-lasting products that require less maintenance, reducing overall costs for end-users.

Applications of Nonwoven Felts in Composite Materials

Automotive Composites with Nonwoven Felts

In the automotive industry, composites with nonwoven felts play a key role in lightweighting and energy efficiency. Felt-reinforced composites are used in various applications, such as:

Heat Shields: Nonwoven felts in heat shields provide essential thermal insulation, protecting critical engine components from heat exposure.

Battery Insulation for Electric Vehicles: In electric vehicles (EVs), felt-reinforced composites help manage battery heat, enhancing both safety and performance. Learn more about thermal runaway in EV batteries.

Structural Components: Composites with felts are used for structural reinforcement, reducing vehicle weight without compromising strength or safety.

Aerospace Applications for Nonwoven Felts in Composites

In aerospace, felt-enhanced composites are invaluable for their lightweight, high-strength, and thermal properties. Applications include:

Thermal and Acoustic Insulation: Felt-reinforced composites provide insulation against heat and noise, contributing to both safety and comfort in aircraft.

Interior Panels: Lightweight composite panels with felt offer durability without adding excess weight, which is crucial in aerospace design.

By using nonwoven felts in these applications, aerospace manufacturers achieve the required balance of strength and weight. These materials also meet rigorous industry standards for fire and impact resistance.

Construction and Infrastructure Applications

In construction, nonwoven felts in composites are used for insulation, soundproofing, and fire resistance. For example:

Building Insulation: Felt-reinforced composites provide effective thermal barriers, making buildings more energy-efficient.

Soundproofing Panels: In commercial construction, felts in composite panels improve sound absorption, creating quieter interior spaces.

The durability of felt-enhanced composites ensures that infrastructure projects maintain their integrity over time, even in harsh environmental conditions.

Renewable Energy Uses for Nonwoven Felts in Composites

Renewable energy projects also benefit from nonwoven felts in composite materials. Wind turbines, for instance, use felt-reinforced composites for lightweight and durable blades. In solar panels, composites with felts can provide insulation, improving efficiency and reducing heat loss. As renewable energy expands, nonwoven felts offer solutions for materials that withstand varied and challenging conditions.

Reducing industrial noise is not only about making machines quieter. It is also about making the room less reflective, less fatiguing, and easier to work in. While the machine itself may be generating the sound, the room often determines how far that sound travels, how long it lingers, and how much it affects the people working nearby.

In factories, warehouses, and manufacturing plants, noise is rarely contained in one small area. Concrete floors, hard walls, metal ceilings, open layouts, and large production spaces can all reflect sound back into the workspace. That reflected sound creates reverberation, which can make a facility feel louder, more chaotic, and harder to work in.

That is where industrial acoustic panels can play an important role. Rather than focusing only on the source of the noise, acoustic panels help treat the room itself by absorbing reflected sound energy and reducing reverberation across the space.

A manufacturing plant may have several loud processes operating at once. Packaging lines, compressors, fabrication equipment, conveyors, assembly areas, and other industrial systems can all contribute to overall sound levels. However, the challenge is not always just the original sound coming from those sources.

The bigger issue is often what happens after the sound is produced.

When sound waves hit hard, reflective surfaces, they bounce back into the room. In a large facility with minimal soft or absorptive materials, that reflection can build throughout the space. The result is longer reverberation time, reduced speech clarity, greater worker fatigue, and a plant floor that feels louder than it needs to be.

This is why two facilities with similar equipment can feel very different from an acoustic standpoint. The layout, ceiling height, surface materials, amount of open space, and existing contents of the room all affect how sound behaves.

One of the most useful ways to think about room noise is reverberation time, often referred to as RT60. RT60 measures how long it takes sound to decay after the source stops. In simple terms, it helps describe how much sound lingers in a space.

In industrial environments, a long reverberation time can make conversations harder, warning signals less clear, and background noise more stressful. Even when workers are wearing hearing protection, excessive reverberation can make communication and awareness more difficult.

Reducing reverberation does not necessarily mean eliminating the original noise source. Instead, it means reducing the sound energy that keeps bouncing around the facility. Acoustic panels are designed to absorb some of that reflected sound, helping the room become more controlled and less harsh.

Hearing protection is essential in many industrial settings. Earplugs, earmuffs, training, audiometric testing, and hearing conservation programs all matter when workers are exposed to elevated noise levels.

However, PPE places much of the responsibility on the worker. It depends on proper selection, fit, use, comfort, training, and compliance. It also does not change the acoustic conditions of the room itself.

Engineering controls take a different approach. They aim to reduce exposure by changing the environment, the equipment, or the path of the noise. Acoustic treatment can support this approach by reducing reflected sound energy in the work area. While every facility still needs to evaluate its own noise exposure, measurements, and compliance requirements, treating the room can be a practical step toward a more complete noise-control strategy.

Industrial acoustic panels are sound-absorbing panels installed on walls, ceilings, or other suitable surfaces to reduce reflected noise. Unlike barriers or enclosures, they are not primarily designed to block sound from one area to another. Their main purpose is absorption.

In a reverberant plant, absorption can make the space feel more controlled. It can reduce sound buildup, improve speech clarity, and make loud production areas easier to manage. For many facilities, this can be especially helpful in areas such as packaging lines, compressor rooms, CNC bays, assembly areas, and large manufacturing zones.

The most effective placement depends on the room. Large wall surfaces near noise-generating equipment, upper wall areas where sound accumulates, and ceiling areas where installation is feasible and safe are common treatment zones.

Poly-Sonic panels from Bouckaert Industrial Textiles are designed to give industrial facilities a practical way to treat factory noise at the room level. Rather than requiring a long custom fabrication process, these panels are available through a factory-direct model and are built for facilities that need a simpler path to acoustic improvement.

The panels are made in the U.S. from PET material and are glass fiber-free, which can make them easier for maintenance and facilities teams to handle during installation. They are also ASTM E84 compliant and listed with an NRC of 0.75, giving plant managers, EHS leaders, and facility teams useful performance information when evaluating whether acoustic panels are a fit for their space.

Another advantage is the purchasing and deployment model. Poly-Sonic panels are designed to ship by the pallet, with available panel sizes including 4′ x 8′ and 4′ x 2′. For many industrial buyers, that can simplify planning because teams can think in terms of coverage, placement, and phased installation instead of waiting on a heavily customized project from the start.

Poly-Sonic panels are not a replacement for every type of industrial noise-control measure. Some facilities may still need enclosures, machine-specific controls, additional measurement, or consultant support depending on their noise levels and compliance requirements. However, for spaces where reverberation and reflected sound are part of the problem, Poly-Sonic panels can be a practical engineering-control option that helps make the room itself less acoustically harsh.

Not every acoustic panel is built for industrial use. Many panel systems are designed for offices, schools, studios, or architectural interiors. Industrial facilities often need something more practical: durable materials, straightforward installation, consistent performance, and a purchasing process that does not require a long design cycle.

Important factors to consider include material construction, fire performance documentation, acoustic performance, installation practicality, and availability. PET acoustic panels can provide sound absorption without glass fiber materials. Fire-rating documentation, such as ASTM E84 compliance, helps facilities evaluate whether a panel is appropriate for their environment. NRC ratings help indicate how much sound a material absorbs, while practical installation options can make it easier for in-house teams to move from planning to deployment.

Lead time also matters. Stocked panels that ship by pallet can reduce delays compared with fully custom acoustic projects, especially when a facility is trying to address noise concerns quickly.

Noise reduction depends on the room geometry, existing surfaces, panel coverage, equipment layout, and where people are located in relation to noise sources.

For many industrial spaces, a 3–5 dB reduction after proper treatment can be meaningful. Because decibels are logarithmic, even a few decibels can affect perceived loudness, communication, and overall exposure. Still, no responsible supplier should guarantee a specific dB reduction without understanding the facility.

The best approach is to start with the room itself.
The ability to prototype with real production materials is one of the most undervalued capabilities a thermal insulation supplier can offer. Too often, engineers are handed sample materials that perform well in a lab but behave differently once they move into volume manufacturing, because the production process was never part of the development conversation.

A supplier worth working with can accommodate various prototyping from the same fiber blends, weights, and manufacturing processes used in full production depending on their material requirements for an initial trial. That continuity means your test data is actually meaningful. A supplier who was responsive and flexible during prototyping turns out to be unable to meet volume requirements, and the program either stalls or scrambles to qualify a new material and vendor simultaneously.

When you are evaluating a thermal insulation partner, the conversation about scale should happen early.
Sourcing PET acoustic substrate domestically closes a lot of those gaps. When your supplier is stateside, the entire supply relationship operates differently. You can get material on shorter notice, communicate directly with the manufacturer about spec adjustments, and build a more responsive production schedule around actual demand rather than around container ship schedules.

For acoustic panel brands in particular, this matters. The commercial interiors market moves fast. Architects and designers specify products late in the process, project timelines compress, and the brands that can deliver quickly and consistently earn repeat business. A supply chain built around 14-week overseas lead times works against that.

Beyond speed, domestic production also comes with greater transparency and accountability. When something needs to change, whether that is a density adjustment, a new thickness, or a color match, you are working with a team that can respond in days rather than weeks.

They keep full control of the design process and the end product.

Poly-Sonic panels are 100% polyester and manufactured entirely in the USA. They carry a recycled content of at least 60% PET, which gives our partners a meaningful sustainability story to bring to LEED-focused projects and ESG-conscious clients. The panels are available in standard sizes, thicknesses, and densities, and we work directly with partners on custom specifications when standard formats do not fit the application.

A few things that set Poly-Sonic apart as a substrate:

Consistent sound absorption performance across production runs, with technical documentation available for specification support

Workable material that cuts cleanly, accepts printing, wraps well, and laminates without issue

Scalable supply designed to grow with OEM, private-label, and branded product programs

Domestic production with significantly shorter lead times compared to overseas alternatives

We also supply Poly-Sonic as rolled goods for partners who need soft acoustic materials, floor underlays, or wrapping fabric for other surface applications. The material is versatile enough to serve a range of finished product formats, which is part of why it works well as a platform for branded acoustic lines.

1. Superior Thermal Insulation

One of the primary reasons manufacturers choose high-temperature felts is their excellent thermal insulation properties. These materials help maintain consistent temperatures inside equipment while preventing heat from transferring to surrounding components.

Effective insulation improves energy efficiency, stabilizes production processes, and protects sensitive equipment from overheating.

In high-temperature manufacturing environments, maintaining proper thermal control can extend equipment life and reduce maintenance costs.

2. Lightweight and Flexible Design

Unlike rigid insulation boards or metal heat shields, industrial felts are lightweight and flexible. This makes them easier to install and integrate into existing designs.

Flexible felts can conform to irregular surfaces and complex geometries, allowing engineers to solve thermal challenges without redesigning equipment layouts.

This flexibility is particularly valuable in applications such as vehicle components, molded panels, and machinery insulation.

3. Thermal and Acoustic Performance

High-temperature industrial felts often provide both thermal insulation and sound absorption. This dual-purpose performance allows manufacturers to reduce noise while managing heat in the same component.

Needled fiberglass felts like Temp-Sonic are commonly used as thermal sound absorbers and acoustic panels in high-heat environments.

For manufacturers building equipment that must meet noise regulations or improve operator comfort, this combination of benefits is especially valuable.

4. Durability in Harsh Environments

Manufacturing environments expose materials to heat, vibration, and chemical exposure. Industrial felts are designed to withstand these conditions while maintaining consistent performance.

High-performance felts are resistant to temperature extremes, moisture, and chemicals, making them suitable for long-term industrial use.

This durability helps reduce replacement frequency and ensures predictable performance over time.

5. Customizable Performance

Another reason manufacturers are adopting high-temperature felts is the ability to customize them to specific requirements.

High-performance felts can be engineered with varying thicknesses, densities, and blends to meet precise thermal and mechanical specifications.

This allows manufacturers to optimize performance without paying for unnecessary material weight or capabilities.

As architectural design continues to prioritize performance, longevity, and efficiency, materials that quietly do their job well are increasingly valued.
At their core, acoustic PET panels exist to solve one problem exceptionally well: controlling sound. In modern environments—open offices, manufacturing-adjacent spaces, educational facilities, and public interiors—uncontrolled noise negatively impacts productivity, communication, and comfort.

PET panels are manufactured from densely compressed polyester fibers that absorb sound waves and reduce reverberation. Instead of reflecting sound back into a space, the material diffuses and dampens it, improving clarity and reducing overall noise buildup. This makes them particularly effective for environments where speech intelligibility and acoustic balance are essential.

PolySonic PET panels are engineered with this singular purpose in mind. Their construction allows architects and buyers to specify thickness and density based on performance needs, not visual embellishment. The result is a solution that works predictably and consistently, especially important for large-scale applications where uniform acoustic performance is critical.

For companies purchasing acoustic panels for soundproofing, simplicity is a strength. PolySonic delivers measurable acoustic benefits without introducing unnecessary variables into the design or installation process.

These foundational tones are intentionally selected to integrate cleanly into a wide range of architectural contexts without competing for attention.

This restrained palette supports designers and specifiers who prioritize cohesion, professionalism, and longevity over trend-driven aesthetics. Neutral colors age better, align more easily with surrounding materials, and reduce the risk of visual obsolescence over time.

Rather than positioning acoustic panels as branding tools or decorative statements, PolySonic supports a more practical design philosophy—one where acoustic solutions serve the space quietly and effectively.
