Needle Punch Felt Manufacturing

Needle punch felt is a nonwoven fabric made by mechanically entangling fibers with barbed needles, rather than by weaving or wet felting. It is the foundation of nearly every product BIT makes.

How needle punch felt is made

During needle punch felting, barbed needles puncture the fibers at a rate of 600 to 2,000 punches per minute. That precise, repeated puncturing entangles and locks the fibers together to form the felt. By changing the needle combination, penetration depth, and fiber selection, we tailor each felt to the application.

From web to finished felt

Production starts with raw fiber that is opened and formed into a web. We then build density and surface characteristics by adding batts and needling the material together. Secondary finishing steps such as heat setting, pressing, and singeing refine the final profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is needle punch felt?

Needle punch felt is a nonwoven fabric made by entangling fibers with barbed needles. The mechanical process locks fibers together without weaving, which produces a strong, uniform felt.

The barbed needles puncture the fibers at roughly 600 to 2,000 punches per minute. The rate, needle type, and penetration depth all influence the final density and texture.

Wet felt relies on moisture, heat, and pressure to mat fibers. Needle punch felt uses barbed needles to mechanically entangle fibers, which gives finer control over density and consistency.

Why needle punch

  • Consistent density across the roll, which matters for acoustic and thermal performance.
  • A wide density range, from light to very high density.
  • Freedom to blend wool, synthetic, and specialty fibers.
  • A strong base for finishing and molding into panels and parts.
